چکیده
Abstract Small-scale aquaculture systems can contribute significantly to food and nutritional security, poverty alleviation, rural development, especially in developing countries. However, the intensification of often has negative environmental outcomes. The adoption diversification practices (e.g. polyculture, pond-dike cropping (PDC)) better management (BMPs) been identified as a possible approach intensify sustainably small-scale production. This study assesses sustainability outcomes BMPs production models. We focus on Myanmar, country characterized by rapidly expanding sector. analyze 624 household surveys with producers central northern Myanmar. estimate effects different outcomes, namely economic (i.e. yield benefit-cost ratio), nitrogen phosphorus use efficiency), security fish self-consumption dietary diversity) through linear mixed-effects Our results reveal that diversified models (whether integrating or not BMPs) could have significant positive well efficiency, compared ‘unimproved monoculture’. such do seem any major effect efficiency. seems little (if any) added studied which suggests need improve existing even develop new fit for Myanmar’s context. These findings implications about contribution enabling sustainable settings other contexts.

Relevance Concerns about the environmental impact of farming has increasingly been the focus of discussions in the EU. Croplands, a primary land use in Europe, have a significant impact on the environment (soil, water bodies, global climate, local biodiversity and human health). The use of fertilisers and pesticides associated with conventional farming may lead to pollution and/or climate chang...
متن کاملShifting gears: Diversification, intensification, and effort increases in small-scale fisheries (1950-2010)
Locally sustainable resource extraction activities, at times, transform into ecologically detrimental enterprises. Understanding such transitions is a primary challenge for conservation and management of many ecosystems. In marine systems, over-exploitation of small-scale fisheries creates problems such as reduced biodiversity and lower catches. However, long-term documentation of how governanc...

FAO promotes Sustainable Production Intensification (SPI), which consists of a technology menu for optimizing crop production per unit area, taking into consideration the range of sustainability aspects including potential and/or real social, political, economic and environmental impacts. The author suggests that Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) cropping is not only well aligned to SPI but a...
